Character: Colette Brunel
Age: 16
Canon: Tales of Symphonia
Canon Point: Before she enters the Tower of Salvation.
Background: http://aselia.wikia.com/wiki/Colette_Brunel
Personality: In many ways, Cruxis could not have picked a more-suited person to be the Chosen than Colette Brunel. She is one of the sweetest, kindest and most selfless individuals that one will ever meet. Because she loves the world she lives in so much, Colette takes her responsibilities as the Chosen very seriously, praying to the goddess Martel every night for the world’s safety and being determined to save the world from doom, no matter what.
Colette does not feel that her duty as the Chosen relies solely on travelling to the Tower of Salvation and transforming into an angel, however. She will never abandon anybody in distress and if some cruel soldier is trying to beat up a poor, defenceless civilian, she will rush to that civilian’s aid. She also likes to think that there is good in everyone – although she will never think that the soldier beating up the civilian is justified and may end up killing the soldier if it comes to it, she will easily forgive that soldier if he shows remorse for his actions.
Colette is a little ditzy, however. She is not stupid but she is incredibly naive and can lack good judgement. Certain things like Zelos’ dirty jokes fly right by her and she has failed to notice in battle that her friends have been poisoned by a monster. Not only that but Colette sometimes comes up with wacky ideas (eg. After finding out that Lloyd sometimes was not allowed his dinner until he memorised his Dwarvern Vows, Colette somehow comes to the conclusion that Lloyd’s foster father must have had secret memory ingredients in the cooking)This ditziness and naivety is probably due to the fact that Colette has grown up in the sheltered village of Iselia, never being allowed out until her sixteenth birthday, so she has a long way to go in terms of street smarts.
In short, Colette is a friendly, kind and well-intentioned but rather ditzy young woman. Or at least that is all there seems to be of her to those who do not know her very well. Deep down, it is a bit of a different story.
To say that life as the Chosen is hard would be a huge understatement and Colette’s life is no different. Because of her role, she is noticeably different from everyone else, making her incredibly lonely. For most of her life, Colette was viewed as the Chosen and not as a normal girl and while Colette accepts her differences, she sometimes wishes that she was the latter. Her transformation, her powers and her ability to sprout wings make her self-conscious and uncomfortable, feeling as if she were a freak.
Additionally, Colette has a very low self-esteem. She often apologises for things that are through no fault of her own and feels incredibly guilty if she thinks that she is a burden on other people. The reason for this is probably because, from a young age, Colette knew that her only purpose was to give up her life once she reached 16. Her life had no more meaning than that.
Colette, however, hides her insecurities with her cheerful, nonchalant smile. Because she cares more about her friends than she does herself, she feels that if she told them of her troubles, she would just worry them and become a huge burden on them. If someone suspects that something is amiss, she will deny it cheerfully unless she is pressured enough. Unfortunately, Colette fails to realise that hiding her problems causes more trouble than prevent it. When Colette transforms into an angel, she starts losing her humanity – first, she loses her ability to eat and taste things and stops getting hungry, then she loses her ability to sleep and stops being tired, then she loses her ability to feel pain, cry and feel the cold. Eventually, Colette loses the ability to speak. She succeeds in keeping the side effects of her angel transformation a secret until Lloyd finds out, causing Lloyd to feel great guilt about not noticing her condition sooner.
Despite her occasional ditziness, Colette is by no means stupid. Sure, she comes up with silly ideas and she has very few street smarts but Colette can be surprisingly perceptive. She wanted to make friends with a woman assassin who was determined to kill her because the assassin had ‘kind eyes’ – she was probably a good person despite the fact that she wanted to kill the Chosen. Colette’s intuition was later proved right as the woman, Sheena, joined forces with the party to help rescue some townspeople and ended up becoming friends with the Chosen instead of killing her.
In short, while Colette is an extremely selfless person who has no hateful bone in her body, she is still human like everyone else and therefore makes mistakes because of her selflessness. In Empatheias, she is likely to try and save everyone and cheer up people who are down, while hiding her own dark and insecure thoughts. I have taken Colette from before she enters the Tower of Salvation because she is well aware that her life is about to come to an end. She admitted to Lloyd about being a little scared but felt happier when she thought about protecting her world. Therefore, I think that she has come with fears but a strong sense of resolve as well. I would like Colette to come into the game with the belief that she is still going to sacrifice herself. She would still attempt to hide this for a while in order not to upset her new friends but interactions with other people and affecting the world with her emotions might give Colette new perspectives on how to protect her world which might not necessarily be the same as canon.
Abilities: Being part-angel (thanks to the Cruxis Crystal imbedded in her collar bone), Colette has the ability to sprout pretty fairy-like wings and can use them to fly.
She also has a few angelic spells at her disposal.
Angel Feathers – Colette throws rings of light at the enemy, leaving a trail of feathers behind and causing a decent amount of damage to her enemies.
Holy Song – Raises the strength and defence of Colette’s allies.
Sacrifice – Colette restores 30% of her friends’ health. However, this spell will also render her unconscious.
Additionally, despite her appearance, Colette is actually pretty strong, thanks to her angel transformation. She is able to carry a fully-grown and muscular man with one hand and little effort (Colette’s comment on this? “Oh, he’s lighter than I thought!”)! She is also able to wield great damage with her two chakrams in battle.
Furthermore, Colette is known to be a huge klutz. This should not be a good thing but for some reason, her clumsiness often results in good consequences...seriously. One such example is that she once trips over a switch to save the party. She also manages to save the party from being attacked by Sheena by tripping over a switch, which made Sheena fall through a trapdoor.
However, Colette is not completely invincible. While amazingly strong, she is also quite slow. Her clumsiness can also sometimes cause problems as well as good things. If Colette trips in battle, it may take her a while to get up and therefore she is vulnerable to attacks.
Alignment: Daimonia – The reason for this is Colette’s self-sacrificing nature. As she is losing her humanity in order to save the world, she gives joy to others at the cost of her own.
Other: Because of her canon point, Colette will come into the game without being able to eat, sleep, feel pain, feel the temperature, cry or speak. She isn’t devoid of feelings and emotion as she previously mentioned wanting to cry but not being able to. After consulting the mods, I’d say that her emotions are hampered but not taken away completely.
As for the inability to speak, Colette is likely to try and communicate by tracing on someone’s hand or later using the amulet for telepathic communication.
Questions: Can Colette carry five Apple Gels? These individually restore 30% of someone’s health and I don’t plan to replenish them once they have run out.
